Located 536 km north of Brisbane and only 21 km from Gladstone (2 km west of the Bruce Highway), Calliope is a small settlement ideal for some quiet fishing and boating. It came into existence as Queensland's first officially proclaimed goldfield, The town was surveyed and alluvial gold was found in the early 1860s.

Calliope still attracts gold fossickers and there are local deposits of petrified wood and chalcedony as well.

The Diggers Arms was built during the gold boom and stands today as a reminder of the town's colourful past
