Mareeba Gold Map Pack FNQ Mareeba Gold Map Pack FNQ

A small field, 8km south-east from the Mareeba railway station, produced 11,846oz of fine gold, most of it from the Queen Constance lode, a north-north-west trending, rather flatly dipping quartz reef standing out as the crest of a low hill. The country rock consists of slate and phyllite of the Barron River Metamorphics. After an initial production of 1,770oz in one year, the grade fell to less than 1oz per ton, and after struggling on for another 8 or 9 years the field was abandoned. The ore also contained some pyrite, rare sphalerite and stibnite.

Gold was won from a number of localities, principally on the western side of the Atherton Geological Sheet area, towards the end of the 1800’s and early 1900’s. The economic depression of the 1930s revived the gold mining industry and resulted in new finds in the Mount Wandoo and Fluorspar areas. Most of the gold has been won from the Chillagoe Gold and Mineral Field; recorded production for this Field for the years 1909 to 1955 is 56,218 fine oz.

Palmer River Gold Maps Palmer River Gold Maps

The Palmer River is a river southwest of Cooktown in northeastern Australia. It was the site of a rich gold rush in the late 19th century which started in 1872. The Palmer River flows west across Cape York to the Gulf of Carpentaria, via the Mitchell River. Its headwaters are the Sussex Range, near the Palmer River Roadhouse, south of Lakeland.Palmer River was one of Australia’s major gold rush locations. William Hann and geologist Norman Taylor found gold in a sandy bed of the river in 1872. Hann maned the river after Arthur Hunter Palmer the then Premier of Queensland. The main settlement of the gold field was Maytown.

Queensland’s first gold discovery was at Kilkivan in 1852 and subsequent findings escalated into a gold rush in the 1860s.  Thousands of prospectors descended on the area when payable quantities of gold were discovered in July 1868 near the site of the present-day Prophet Gold Mine. The first Kilkivan township was actually built on the gold fields several kilometres from where it exists today (when gold was dis-covered under the original township it had to be relocated!

Located 536 km north of Brisbane and only 21 km from Gladstone (2 km west of the Bruce Highway), Calliope is a small settlement ideal for some quiet fishing and boating. It came into existence as Queensland's first officially proclaimed goldfield, The town was surveyed and alluvial gold was found in the early 1860s.

Calliope still attracts gold fossickers and there are local deposits of petrified wood and chalcedony as well.

The Diggers Arms was built during the gold boom and stands today as a reminder of the town's colourful past

Qld_CapeRiverFNQ.zip Qld_CapeRiverFNQ.zip

Alluvial gold occurred in small rich leads (Canton, Pothole, and Bluff ) along Gorge Creek and in the Cape River north of Oak Vale homestead. The leads carried gold to a depth of 12m, where they died out in contact with hornblende schist bedrock. At one time consideration was given to dredging these deposits, but nothing eventuated. Gold and relics can still be found in the area with ease.
